Lime is derived from limestone, a sedimentary rock formed mainly of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral and molluscs. Its major materials are the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different forms of calcium carbonate.<\/p>\n<p>It is generally held that the Greeks began the large scale production of lime-based mortars in Europe and it was from there that the technology spread to Rome.<\/p>\n<p>The Romans early recognized the need for a mortar that could be used under ground and under water &#8211; the development of hydraulic mortars is credited to them and the use of <em>Pozzolans<\/em> was crucial for this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3526\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pozzolana.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3526\" class=\"wp-image-3526 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pozzolana.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pozzolana.jpg 400w, https:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pozzolana-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pozzolana<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Pozzolans<\/em> would include volcanic ash or clay brick\/tile dust &#8211; these would be added to the lime mortar mix <strong>to create a faster set and reduce the mortar&#8217;s vulnerability to frost and rain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vitruvius\">Vitrivius<\/a> describe <em>Pozzolans<\/em> as producing &#8220;<em>astonishing results<\/em>&#8221; and he explains the process behind them:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3520\" style=\"width: 805px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170705_Vitruvius-Pozzolana.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3520\" class=\"wp-image-3520 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170705_Vitruvius-Pozzolana.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"795\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170705_Vitruvius-Pozzolana.jpg 795w, https:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170705_Vitruvius-Pozzolana-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/isabelbarrosarchitects.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170705_Vitruvius-Pozzolana-768x422.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 795px) 100vw, 795px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ten Books on Architecture, Vitrivius<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lime <em>Pozzolan <\/em>binders are obtained by the addition of a <em>Pozzolan (<\/em>natural or artificial) to the lime while mixing mortar. A natural <em>Pozzolan <\/em>is a volcanic material, which originally derives from Pozzuoli, an Italian region around Vesuvius. Photo by James Cocks www.jamescocks.com.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Pozzolan<\/em>s became the backbone of Roman construction and were incorporated in the &#8216;Roman Concrete&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pozzolans <\/em>of\u00a0Pozzuoli were used to build &#8216;La Via Appia&#8217;, the Colosseum and the Pantheon of Rome.
