Sustainability
We believe that architecture and sustainability go hand in hand, and that a well designed building can not only be visually stunning, but also have a positive impact on the environment.
At isabel barros architects, we define sustainable architecture as the practice of designing buildings that reduce their negative impact on the environment, while also providing a healthy and comfortable living space for its occupants.
To achieve this, we use a combination of design strategies and technologies that promote energy efficiency, reduce waste and emissions, and optimise the use of natural resources. Europe, along with the rest of the world, must transition from a linear economic model to a circular one, where resources are conserved, and waste is minimised. To achieve this, we are fully committed to transitioning to a circular economy.
In a circular economy, waste and resource use are minimised, and the value of products and materials is preserved for as long as possible through the principles of good design, durability, and repair. By emphasising these aspects, products are created to have a prolonged lifespan, reducing the need for constant replacement.
Moreover, when a product eventually reaches the end of its life, its components are utilised and repurposed to create new and valuable products, ensuring a continuous cycle of resource utilisation.
Sustainability is at the core of our practice. Our focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, waste reduction, and the use of recycled or locally sourced materials ensures that our buildings are not only visually stunning but they are designed to make a positive contribution to the environment.
We believe that sustainability goes beyond just the design of the building. We also take into account the impact that the building has on its surroundings, such as the local ecology and community. By using sustainable design principles, we aim to create buildings that are not only functional and visually pleasing, but also enhance the natural environment and contribute to the local community.
Europe, with its historic cities and aging building stock, faces the challenge of outdated structures ill-equipped for energy efficiency and the demands of a changing climate. Currently, a staggering 75% of existing buildings are energy inefficient. We feel we have a critical role in the substantial upgrading of existing buildings across Ireland, and we are committed to work towards a climate-neutral EU by 2050.
isabel barros architects is a founding signatory of Irish Architects Declare. We share our vision with clients and partners and encourage them to join us on our mission.
To fulfil the EU’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, new buildings must be carbon-neutral, and, equally important, existing buildings require extensive upgrades.
The construction industry must undergo an unprecedented acceleration in energy renovations to make this ambitious goal a reality for EU buildings.
At isabel barros architects, we recognise these challenges and opportunities. We strive to contribute to the transformation of the built environment, ensuring that both new and existing buildings align with the goals of energy efficiency and climate resilience.
